Hanick Home Dedication

  On May 30, 2015, Avery County Habitat for Humanity dedicated the new home of Tony and Kawana Hanick, and their daughter, Lettie. Local community members presented the Winters with a Bible, and a hand-made quilt made by Banner Elk Presbyterian Comfort Makers.  This house is the 41st house built by Avery County Habitat for Humanity since 1991, and the 16th house in the Milford Meadows community in Elk Park. Women Build 2014

High Country women are invited to grab their hammers and volunteer during Habitat for Humanity’s sixth annual National Women Build Week. During the week of May 3-11, more than 300 Habitat affiliates nationwide will host women build projects in partnership with Lowe’s, the underwriter of Habitat’s Women Build program. National Women Build Week challenges women to come together and devote at least one day to building simple, decent and affordable housing in their local communities. More than 41,000 women volunteers from all 50 states have participated in previous years. Lowe’s contributes more than $1.75 million to National Women Build Week and provides $5,000 Lowe’s gift cards to more than 300 participating affiliates.  National Women Build Week is one of the major initiatives supported through Lowe’s five-year, $20 million pledge to Habitat. Sara’s Story

Dear Habitat Supporter,   Eight months into owning our new home, life has changed dramatically for the better. In the house we previously lived in, we struggled to maintain a nice, safe, homey environment for our children. We are very thankful to have been blessed with a new house, a safe, comfortable place we can proudly call home.   Our old home had many issues that we had to deal with on a daily basis. Trying to prevent and get rid of mold was a constant battle. Our children were frequently sick. Our six-year-old developed terrible coughs that would progress into ear infections. Our three-year-old had several respiratory infections, causing him to be placed on multiple inhalers. Since moving in, however, we have had no infections of any kind. Allergies that were once a constant problem very rarely bother us. Everyone is much healthier living in a more sanitary environment. The baby has had a healthier place to grow and…
