Who will be crowned “The Big Cheese” of Avery County?

This summer, seven Avery County community members will take what they already do – BBQ’s, pool parties, and games – and use it to benefit Avery County Habitat for Humanity. From July 1st until August 9th, each contestant will compete in Avery Habitat’s inaugural “Big Cheese” event, a six-week fundraising competition to see which community member can raise the most funding for Avery Habitat’s next home.

Committed to Avery Habitat’s cause, the seven “Big Cheese” contestants are:

  • Richard McGuire, Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce

Contestants can raise funds in any ethical manner they choose. They can host a cookout, send letters to friends, or even stand at the town stoplight with a bucket (with the appropriate permission, of course). Community members are encouraged to donate online in support of their favorite contestant by visiting www.averycohfh.com/big-cheese.  The website will go live on July 1, 2013 and will include contestant photos, bios, and a unique “Donate” button for each contestant. Also, be sure to visit the contestants at their local establishments to stay up to date on their unique fundraising ideas. At the end of the contest period, the contestant who has raised the most funds will be crowned the 2013 “Big Cheese” of Avery County.

The winner will be announced and crowned at Avery Habitat’s Annual Summer Dance, which will take place from 7:00 to 11:00pm on Saturday, August 17th at Mountain Glen Country Club. The fun-filled evening will include a buffet dinner, DJ, dancing, and Johnny Cash & Dolly Parton impersonators. The event is open to the public, so come join in on the fun. Tickets cost $25 in advance ($30 at the door) and may be purchased from Avery Habitat staff members or from members of the Habitat Women’s Fundraising Committee.
